This has been the first weekend in a long time without any close deadline, so I spent the time doing, well, nothing. But that's not completely true. I made a long-awaited (and much-needed) complete redesign of my personal home page. I moved to a CMS (TextPattern), and a new hosting. There are still some corners to cut, but the "beta" version is already online. Don't hesitate to send your comments!

I expect to move my blog to the new home page in the near future, so stay tuned and be ready to change your feed reader.

• Cambio de trabajo. Esta semana empecé en CSC, despues de un par de años en el CTIC. La despedida de mis anteriores compañeros (pero vigentes amigos) fue el sábado pasado y tanto mi convocatoria de cervezas como la cena que habia organizada para ese dia (que no tenia nada que ver con mi marcha) creo que salieron muy bien.
• Docking station para el VAIO. Regalo de despedida desde el sótano mas entrañable del parque tecnológico: una docking station para el portatil. Un acierto absoluto: es algo que me apetecia muchísimo y no me atrevía a comprarlo. Ahora mismo está funcionando genial si enciendo el ordenador ya enchufado (reconoce todo como PCI convencional). Con un monitor de 19'' panorámico y a 1440x900 se ven las pelis de lujo. [postearé los dos trucos que tuve que hacer para usarlo].
• El domingo me voy de viaje al Reino Unido por motivos laborales. Supongo que no rompo ninguna regla de confidencialidad contando esto :). En principio una semanita y vuelta el finde. A ver que me encuentro allí, pero yo encantado de viajar. Esto es empezar con buen pie el trabajo.
• Enganchado a Heroes. Primera serie que al acabar un episodio me crea la necesidad enfermiza de ver el siguiente.

Wow! one of my photographs of the Barrios de Luna bridge illustrates up to seven Wikipedia.es articles. Last time I checked, it was only present in two of them. Apparently, Wikipedia editors enjoy this photo! By the way, I've just discovered that this bridge can be also found in Youtube (see video).

I may sound silly for a geek like me, but I wasn't a Flickr user... until now. I have access to a personal photo album as part of my membership to AsturLiNUX, and I've used it for years. However, I think the time has come to move my photos to a new server, and the obvious choice is Flickr. There is a number of reasons to make this change: broader bandwidth, useful third-party applications and mash-ups, a public API, georreferenced photos, etc. My first experiences with Flickr are very positive. Let's hope that Flickr would offer RDF data soon!

Since my last post, I've been recovering from the flu. I was off sick for more than a week, but fortunately I'm much better now. In fact, I've just returned from a short business trip to Logroño and Zaragoza. I also managed to help Wikier to write and submit a paper about SWAML (read my previous post about SWAML).

I've just discovered that somebody owns the domain berrueta dot com. Do they intend to make money with it?

Usually, last year retrospectives are published as the year reaches its end. However, mine will appear today. It looks like an appropriate date, perhaps I'm still on time for Reyes Magos to know of my merits!

I've been busy working as a researcher, although I didn't post anything about my work in this blog (notable exception being my involvement in a W3C working group). Other milestones in the last twelve months were my first paper published in an international conference (other pieces will follow soon, I hope) and lots of presentations (some of them in public conferences or workshop meetings).

At the same time, I've started the long way to my PhD. During the first semester, I attended to some lessons, and since summer, I'm struggling with my research report. I've found an appealing idea, but progress so far is slow because my lack of time.

During the last year, I taught lessons on several topics, chiefly Semantic Web and XML. One of these lessons was part of a Summer Course of the University of Oviedo, and that was the first time (and the only one, up to now) that I taught in the University. I also advised two of my friends with their academic projects (one and two). Both developed superb projects, but the merit is theirs.

Fortunately, I had some leisure time. I enjoyed a few opportunities in the countryside and the mountains, and I read lots of books. I didn't travel a lot, but I went to Barcelona for the first time (coincidentally, I returned there some months later for business).

In the free software arena, I gave some talks (Nava, Gijón, Oviedo). I had the opportunity to spend some time with people like Xavi de Blas and Richard Stallman. I attended to the GUADEC 2006. Unfortunately, I cut down my involvement in AsturLiNUX, and said goodbye to the Zinc package in Debian (which is my fault, as I couldn't find the time to give proper maintenance to the software). On the other hand, I released a small library for Haskell and participated in the SWAML project.

Finally, some months ago I decided to write my blog entries in English. After this time, I think the experience is even better than I could imagine. Intensive use of English (not just in the blog, but also in my work, almost everyday) has led to some improvement of my skills, although I want to go further.

El 2006 me ha dado muchas alegrias, ha sido un gran año para mi. He cerrado etapas en mi vida que me han abierto nuevos caminos.

Sin embargo, no hay un solo dia de este año en el que no me haya arrepentido de haber hecho más por mi futuro.
Si que es verdad que me siento muy orgullosa de mi misma, me he sabido buscar la vida, tengo lo que tengo porque me lo he ganado ya que nadie me ha regalado nada.

Laboralmente me ha ido mucho mejor de lo que esperaba, no he parado de trabajar, encontré un proyecto en el que tengo la gran suerte de colaborar, que me ha llenado de ilusión y me ha hecho encontrar en parte el camino que busco profesionalmente.

Dejo con tristeza que se vaya el 2006 para reencontrarme con el miedo a la incertidumbre que me espera en el año nuevo.
Si pudiera apostar por un adjetivo para el año 2007 sin duda diré que será intenso.

Mi proyecto se terminará, si todo va bien, para principios de verano. No cabe duda de que tengo ganas de verlo en la calle, de que todo vaya bien... pero por otro lado se que echaré mucho de menos estos dias. Siento mi trabajo como un hijo al cual voy a tener que dejar atrás y que será criado por otros.

Esta última semana he estado de vacaciones, mis primeras vacaciones desde hace muchos meses, y estoy deseosa de reencontrarme con él el dia dos, ver si ha crecido... es una sensación indescriptible.

Nadie me garantiza nada para después de verano, ni siquiera yo tengo muy claro mis alternativas. Tengo ganas de hacer cosas nuevas, de aprender más, y crecer. Se que estoy bastante limitada por mi formación, pero algún dia espero encontrarme con esa barrera transparente, ese techo de cristal con el que se topan muchas mujeres al querer ascender a puestos de responsabilidad, los cuales muy pocas llegan a conseguir.

Soñar es gratis ¿no?, y dicen que la esperanza es lo último que se pierde.

Sólo debo insistir, no tener miedo y confiar en que el 2007 me traerá mucho más. Yo pondré todo lo que esté en mi mano para conseguir un futuro aún mejor.

Que el año venidero os traiga todo lo que deseeis.

(My apologies to Engligh-readers of this blog -if any-, but today's post is closely connected with the significance of today's date in the Spanish culture, so I'll write in Spanish) Como saben todos los que llevan al menos un año leyendo este diario, el año pasado por estas fechas anuncié mi fichaje por una gran empresa de Internet. Por desgracia, me precipité, y al final las cosas no salieron como esperaba. Aquella compañía decidió gastar el dinero que estaba previsto para mi sueldo en comprar un popular portal de videos, por lo que se frustró mi incorporación (al parecer no tenían liquidez suficiente para hacer frente a los dos gastos).

Afortunadamente, ha surgido otra oportunidad. No quiero precipitarme como la otra vez, pero si todo va bien, antes de un mes estaré en una prestigiosa institución académica norteamericana, muy conocida por su acrónimo de tres letras. Va a ser un lujo poder recorrer sus pasillos y pasar por delante de los despachos de Noam Chomsky, Richard Stallman, Tim Berners-Lee, Nicholas Negroponte y tantos otros gurús que trabajan allí (decenas de ellos, ganadores del Premio Nobel). O quizás tropezarme con los alumnos, los futuros Kofi Annan, Buzz Aldrin, Leslie Lamport, Andy Tanenbaum o Jim Gettys (bueno, a este último ya me lo tropecé este verano en Cataluña). ¡Ojalá esta vez todo salga bien!

Ya hacia tiempo que no miraba mi perfil en la web del irc hispano y me encontré con dos comentarios de un barrapuntero que me veo casi casi obligada a postear, la verdad es que me ha hecho bastante gracia. Ahí van :P
